U.S. nickles,are they worth anything?

Lucky enough to go to a coin show last week,1 of my purchases was a coin album, quite cheap ,contained a small amount of Aussie sterling coins and few U.S. silver dimes and a heap of other stuff..I at first thought it was a better deal than it was as I thought a page containing some older nickles were silver(stupid Aussie doesn't know U.S. coins).

Anyway they are:

V type :1905,1910

bison/indian head:1934,1935,1936,1936(D mint mark),1937,1937(D mint mark)

The bison/indian ones are a very nice looking coin,I had never seen them before and just had to get them.If I had of known they weren't silver.........oh well.
All in all had a good day bought a bit @ under spot, and a bit @ over ,should have bought more than I did.

In terms of real money, they are worth more than the dollar bill ... and will continue to appreciate while the dollar depreciates.

Didn't they already pass a law against melting down nickels as well as pennies and transporting them out of the country??

I think the wording was along the lines that it was illegal to melt down coins with the intent to sell the metals internationally.

I suppose a savvy scrapper could sell could sell them if he did so with a printed statement that his intent was for the melted coins to be sold for domestic use. Not that anyone wants to tangle with the Treasury Dept.

No, the ban is against melting them for profit or exporting them (in quantity) for any reason. You can melt or destroy them for fun or educational purposes. The ban will apply for as long as there is a risk of currency shortages (that's where the Treasury derives their authority in this regard). Those of us who remove the pennies and nickels from circulation will force more coins to be minted so that this risk eventually disappears. But if the dollar keeps falling they'll have to replace all of both with steel or aluminum (or just get rid of them and the dime) and that may take a while.
